Silky.

Last night, Oxford, an audience of three. And Silky turned it into a really fun gig for audience and acts. Not easy to make an audience laugh when there's so few of them, cos everyone gets self-conscious. Silky ensured huge laughter all night, for all acts. Really impressive.

Cheers

Nic

Seconded.
Some people would have pulled the gig and others would have gone ahead in a half hearted way. Silky went for it completely and turned what should have been a nightmare into one of the most enjoyable nights I've had in a while. He kept the laughter levels up all night and all 4 of us had good gigs.

Best compere in M/cr - des sharples

seen him four times he's brilliant

worst compere for repeating himself is Ian Fox Marrs

seen him several times in 8 months and always the same stuff about queen mum, peacocks, capishe, millionaire, haitian comedy club, bi momma and all the usual stuff. Told he won the gong and god knows how!!!

Mick ferry is ace by the way a real compere....take note...

Not really comparable. Des has been doing comedy for much longer than Ian, and as a result of that, has a larger bank of material.

Mick Ferry rocks. Stephen Amos is also a master of the craft. Certainly earned his fee at Sundays gong...

Unfair. This guy has never really set himself up as a compere. Sometimes he's had to do it and as everyone knows it's not really worked but at least he's tried to be a compere. Can't we give him a cheer fror trying at least? He had a go but it hasn't worked. So what. At least he tried..

One to watch

Brandi Borr

New at the MCing lark but bloody fantastic and looks look she's been doing it for ever.

Catch her at the Aardvark in the near future and in the New Year at Clap 'n' Tickle! and at her Improv Club - Improvsters!

I've had the misfortune to see all of them more than once, and they all made a not terribly good evening even more excrutiating. What makes these people think they're any good in the first place? Luckily there seems to be more good comperes out there than appaling ones.

I think it's only fair to reveal your true identity if you're going to come on here and slag people off.

By the sounds of it though the three people you mention below are very new (like a judge, I've never heard of them) - and that is probably more of a reason for any 'crapness' rather than some kind of genetic disorder, whereas Martin Davies , Alfie Joey and James 'fingers' Dowedeswell are all seasoned pros, which is why they are so good at what they do.

Funniest intro I ever saw was Malcolm Hardee on a Sunday at Up The Creek.
"What do we hate down here in Greenwich eh? We hate poetry don't we?"
(Big cheer)
"We hate Americans, don't we?"
(Bigger cheer)
"Well, here's an American poet!"

Lee Mack, Daniel Kitson, Lee Hurst,Kevin McCurran, Patrick Monaghan, Jay Sodagar, Silky, Paul Thorne,Glen Maney, Harvey Oliver,Steve Williams, Windsor,Andre Vincent and loads more whose names haven't stuck, because I haven't seen their normal act as well.

I think that the compere can make or break an evening. You don't get many bad ones apart from in small over the pub gigs in London and some of them are so bad, they are still funny.

Anyone who thinks it's easy should try doing it on a regular basis with a different crowd every few weeks. They'd soon find out how hard it is.

Mick Ferry - top guy.

That wouldn't be the same Mr. Hardee who introduced me as
"Some bloke who looks like a bit of a peadophile", would it?

Can we reopen this discussion on the best compere(s) around.

I would be interested to see if any new names pop up.

Can I suggest Maff Brown as an excellent M.C to kick us off again...
