If he's only been going a year, he's pretty damn good, although I think I gigged with him at last year's festival. Whatever, he is good.

I thought he was not only dark, but fresh, i had the oppurtunity to gig with him a few times, and i think Rick's going to go far, he's already making the right waves (no that's not an indirect fat joke) and so what if he pisses off a few christians? like T in the Park was going to make his career, if anything people love to hate, cos its all they know how to do...

And best of all off stage he's a top bloke as well, i see great things in the path of the Dark Prince, loved his abortion material, as well as the Hans Christen Andersen (is that the right spelling?) material...

And yes the pope is a nazi...

I would add "painfully unfunny" and "embarrassing" to that list.

The lad has a decent stage presence but is clearly confusing childish shock tactics with comedy.

Shouting "Jesus is a rape child" and "God is a cunt" in a very loud voice might get a laugh in the playground but surely he would be better advised to write some gags instead?

I'm guessing that's why you're an enigma and Rick's a comedian who took the roof off, when I watched him the other evening. The stated sentences are taken from complete jokes and therefore, I suggest a career in journalism would make you far more enigmatic. You're made for the job !

I said to Rick the other night, take no notice of the good reviews and take no notice of the bad, it's subjective. Although some critics are more subjective than other.

Rick's a nice guy with a good stage presence and his material is coming on nicely, to an extent, where "most" audiences will think he's a really good act.

Yes he did take the roof off. I was very nicely surprised by how polished he was. Considering it was Helensburgh - a notorious graveyard for many a comic - he stormed it.

Well structured and delivered, intelligent gags with a nice geopolitical twist, which made me laugh out loud on several occasions. Don't think I heard a single knob gag.

Thanks for the career advice. As you're a self proclaimed 'funnyman' I'll bow to your greater knowledge regarding comedy, too.
I'll watch Mr Molland's rise through the comedy ranks with interest.

It would appear so. Again, as you are a respected comedy critic I'll bow to your knowledge too.
I'll try and catch Rick's act again in a few months and see if I can get "the point".

Something for the posters, Anderson.

The List wrote:
Anderson has the manner and wit of a pathological lunatic and therefore should only be viewed by those who find 'You've Been Framed' funny. His distracting outfits are unfortunatly not enough to remove attention from his face which is sinisterly odd, to say the least. His reputation for evil is well-deserved and one can only hope that the standards of comedy in hell are low enough for him to achieve success in the afterlife. It's way too late for this world. Minus 10 stars. (Sian Bevan)

I have to say I'm with Enigma & I can't see why you've jumped down his throat. Rick Molland is both painfully unfunny and needlessly offensive - he is one of the few comics who I have ever felt the urge to walk out on.

Yes, the words "God is a cunt" are part of an extended routine, but one shouldn't infer that the rest of the routine is comedy gold. As I recall, the routine consisted of him saying God is a cunt several times, and then giving proofs: earthquakes, tsunamis, James Blunt (or some such pop culture petty annoyance - I can't really remember - which you could see coming a mile off). Comedy by numbers.

I should add that, although I found him offensive, I have enjoyed "offensive" acts like Jim Jeffries, who at least gives the impression of having some knowledge of what he speaks about (unlike Rick, whose "God is a rapist" routine demonstrates nothing more than that he hasn't read the Gospel narrative & had no idea what the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception actually was).

The claim that his material is in any way "intelligent", as suggested in previous posts, I can only assume is some sort of private joke.

But I don't deny he has stage presence and "confidence" - which one might also describe as "complete absence of self-awareness" - and this may well serve him just as well as material. I find that a depressing thought.

Have to say I agree with The Observer on this one. Molland is one of Scotland's many truly awful open spots I've had the misfortune of seeing.

What irks me particularly about Molland is that he seems to genuinely believe he's some kind of secular fire-brand liberal in the mould of Bill Hicks or Stewart Lee - but blatantly doesn't have the intellectual clout to back this up.

The saying "its funny cause its true" doesn't apply to Molland, cause the stuff he references spans from ill-informed to just plain wrong.

There's a clique of them gigging up north and amazingly he's not even the worst??? God help the Scottish comedy scene - but God's probably not listening thanks to Molland calling him a c**t.

Yep there is a clique of shite - they know who they are, but thankfully there is also a large number of very very good Scottish comedians breaking through to challenge the vintage of the Mearns/McLean/Clarke/Muir era.

Do they? Seeing as I didn't know there was one, I guess I'm in it. Can't we just all hold hands and make sweet comedy love?

I love everyone. And I think Rick Molland is funny.

Rick's got some good gags and a nice line in ad-libs. I was also impressed with his crowd work during the festival. His topical stuff, which I know he's keen to keep fresh and edgy, could sometimes do with a bit of refinement and depth - but he's always trying new stuff and usually succeeding in improving.

Pretty impressive considering the short time he's been doing it and I've never seen him not earn his keep onstage. More potential than many.
