But surely that’s the very least a comedian should do. As I’ve said before – the laugh should be the start of a comedian’s job, not the end - Steve Bennett.
What a load of old self indulgent bollocks ! |

Surely he's right? Surely anyone getting paid is expected to make people laugh?
What will be funny is when Bennett awards himself the £75. |

My point is that getting a laugh is the least a comedian should do – that there's more to the art than that. Otherwise just go and tell pub jokes with confidence, that'll work.
You might think that's pretentious ... but it can't really be 'self-indulgent'. |

No comics really sit down and thinks "What I'm going to do is to create a work of art here." That's for others to judge, if they will.
All a comic does is to WRITE what they think is funny and then PERFORM it to people with the immediate goal of getting laughs. They may have a brilliantly original mind or a message they want earnestly to convey or a captivating presence. They may be great storytellers or develop a brilliant stage persona. But that is for the audience or the critic to decide.
The beauty of stand up is that it celebrates difference and idiosyncrasies. It is extremely validating to have those things appreciated. There is artfulness and brilliance in what a comic does, but no comic is bigger than the laughs they get. It is the lifeblood of live comedy. It is the sign of true connection. |
