Why not?
I've never done one of these stand up courses, and as I'm more interested in writing than performing perhaps I never will. But if they help someone considering stand up to build confidence and gain experience, admittedly in a limited environment, they can't be that bad can they? |

It's looking very good.
As for courses. Telling people to do them or not do them is wrong advice. Each person has to find out what the course is about, what they think they will get from it and decide if it is the route for them.

VirginMirth was cool, but I learnt a whole lot more getting out there and actualy doing it.

The course I did in Birmingham helped me realise something I'd always wanted to do, but had never known how to go about. It gave me the focus, the contacts and the balls to go out there and do it, and I only wish I'd done it a few years sooner.

i thoroughly enjoyed virginmirth and it gave me a lot of confidence but comedy is more of a hobby for me rather than wanting to be the next big thing.
met some people who i now consider to be mates, that alone makes it worth it in my book.

completely agree. I have learned more on the circuit and continue to learn more than I could on a course.
But before I went on the course it all seemed very scary and difficult to get into, and by doing the course I met some great people and real kindred spirits.
Its about how to put your talent to use - you cannot teach what isnt there.

Some people, for example, will do a degree in engineering and upon completion know fuck all about engineering.
Some people have watched someone knock up a few dry walls and have an instant grasp of engineering.
I guess my point is that for some people it will work, others will be wasting their time. It's personal preference.

Courses are generally run by people whose slant on comedy is to suck money out of long-suffering comics rather than punters. It's a bad attitude and shouldn't be encouraged. don't be an abused moose.
There's an Estonian saying: "The work will teach you how it's done". The Estonians are right. Just get on the cunting stage.

I mis-read this as Etonians and was thinking what a waste of money all those tuition fees were if that's their teaching philosophy.
