but aren't one off no-shows just an unfortunate but inevitable part of a promoter's life anyway?

No. If you run a proper club people show.
If you run an open mike night less people show.

If you book a club 3-6 months ahead half the comedy course people will have given up by the time they realise it isn't basket weaving.

It is not inevitable either - before the invention of the comedy course there wasn't
such a huge demand for opens from people who you will never see again.
You aren't old enough to remember that world so your opinion is er... bollocks?

3) Can you imagine trying to get a spot by just waving a certificate at a promoter?

People tell me they have certificates as if I give a shit.

If an educator can't guarantee success of some kind surely he's a fraud?

No. It just means that Mr Cook is an avericious old sod.

I went on James's course. Not only was it excellent and good fun he and Janice Connolly didn't try to force anyone to be the same as anyone else. In fact they positively encouraged people to be different

I made friends through the course James and Janice being two of them and I learnt a lot, they didn't pull any punches or give any false impressions.

Janice and James as well as being pro acts are dedicated fans of comedy and comedians. James lives for comedy and humour.

No one's ripping anyone off, if you're stupid enough to think that if you just go on a comedy course you'll suddenly be transformed into an amazing comic then you're stupid and deserve to have your money taken off you.

So what if not everyone on a course turns out to be a good comedian that's hardly a measure of comedy or comedians or comedy courses.

OK, stuff like this will often get pointed out to you by fellow acts and punters but not necessarily straight away.

It's the kind of thing the Huw Thomases of the world will be only too glad to try and explain to you if only you have the self-confidence to ask them.

Surely those are exactly the terms such a course should be measured in.

Yeah it is Miller you sad little man. It's better than living for vitriol like you, so why don't you go off and hate somewhere else you dreary pompous churl.

Sorry. I'll aim to be less sarcastic in future. Like Mr Cook.

All I'm saying is - if I'd paid £175 to do a comedy course I'd hope they could make me bloody funny.
Surely a sensible attitude towards capital expenditure...?

I meant open mike spots and it was a question, not an opinion as I don't know the first thing about promoting/running a club. Is it really that bad that you get an influx of no-shows just from people who have realised that comedy isn't for them?

No, I think they're there to educate based upon their experiences and you're there to learn and take ideas on board. It's up to you what you do with it.
