riiight, well next time your cuddly wuddly gets his wanger out i'll be sure to get my digital camera ready. It will be nice to have it on disc to accompany the image that will have burned its way onto my retna for use in later life during my therapy sessions.

People in this country do seem to expect more from women comics than from male comics. I wish I could say it was tradition, but in the days of the music hall some of the most rip roaring comics were women.

We are allowed to get away with far less, which means it is a lot harder for us to take risks and therefore improve in both material and comedy.

I saw a bill the other night where all 3 of the very funny very well respected male comics did "isnt it funny when you are on drugs" and "I like taking my woman from behind" material. a woman doing what is percieved as "traditional female jokes" like these were traditional male jokes... wouild have been slated... mainly on this very site.

Comedy comes from teh heart... we have to face that every time we talk from our hearts we will get a shit load of shit for being predictable.
Therefore its very hard as a woman to take the risks that make a good comic.

If people started counting our laughs rather than criticising our references you would find we are legion and we are funny

I just read this thread and I thought "why are people surprised that white, middle class male students are sexist?" We live in a sexist society and it seems politics (and especially radical politics) seems a dirty word amongst students these days.

It'd be nice if we lived in a world where the only criteria was if you were funny, but sadly we don't.

im a female new act [open mike] and i have a male comedian friend at the same level as me. i put it to him that it's harder for me than him and he agreed. i think men dont like to be challenged by women. if they dont have the guts to do something they dont want to see a 'girl' do it. plus i always feel i have to get the audience to like me wheras male comedians seem to have to try and show the audience who's boss. i feel the audience just cant accept a female being boss instead i play at being endearing and likable. at the end of the day as someone famous said icant remember who 'if you got in a fight with the audience theyde win coz thiers only one of you and loads of them' thats why women i suggest next time you have a gig remember to bring your pepper spray.

also my friend said woman arnt as funny because thier not as imature as men im sorry thats bollox woman are just as funny if not more. we just dont succeed as much as men at comedy because were not as good at coping with adrenaline because we didn't have to do the hunting.

Obviously you didn't get the chance to go to school either, looking at your spelling and turn of phrase. I put it to you that you are in fact a Victorian urchin and have spent your childhood making lace. Maybe the audience don't get jokes like:

"You know when you're hunched over a table all day and all you get paid is tuppence, directly to your father?"

Funny women, funny men, it doesn't matter. Funny is funny.

Maybe women who aren't funny are less likely to try stand-up than men who aren't funny. Male ego is such that every man is programmed to think that they're the life and soul of the party and deserve to be the ringleader of much hilarity.

I've seen hilarious female acts die on their arses in front of audiences who have been prejudiced based on gender. I've also seen an audience, who relates to a female act, roar with laughter at nothing.

If you're good, then keep being good.

Sometimes Lesbian audiences in "women's spaces" can be like that trying tto be as supportive as possible to female acts (in any discipline, not just comedy) and sometimes they're not, I've seen female acts die on their stinking hoop infront of a prodominantly lesbian audience because their material is all about their boyfriend, or heterosexual sex, and they've not made a point of addressing the fact that they're infront of a prodominantly lesbian audience, even something as simple as "you're lucky you don't have to put up with this" would suffice, but they've essentially gone on stage and marginalised the entire audience by almost denying their existence.

anyway, all audiences are different, with experience we all learn how to handle different audiences accordingly.

It seems to me that given that most sexism and misogyny comes from the insecure in society
and among the most insecure people are the young - mostly students by definition.

They don't have the self-confidence or indeed success that might make them attractive to girls/women
and probably they are the most likely group of people to be misogynist/sexist when you actually think about it.

They probably don't have the emotional maturity to deal with rejection by women either
whereas by the time you're my age you're just used to asking people out
and them saying No ...to the extent that you realise that most of them are actually flattered
to be chatted up even by an ugly twat.

They are too young to realise that like most negativity it is self-fulfilling
and the reason they don't have a girl is because they are too depressed
about not having a girl and that makes them depressing
and no one wants to hang out with someone depressing.
This is called Klein's Law.

If you want to see misogyny or misandry at full pelt the average open mike night
is a good place to start.
Not that I believe that what people say promotes attitudes in others...

That said I've never noticed students being particularly misogynist/sexist -
not more so than grown ups - I just think that if they are they have more of an excuse.
