...and they're all male again
| Quote: | The nominations for this year’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards have been announced – and it’s another all-male shortlist.
In the running for the man award are:
Idiots of Ants: This Is War John Bishop: Elvis Has Left The Building Jon Richardson: This Guy At Night Russell Kane: Human Dressage Tim Key: The Slutcracker Tom Wrigglesworth’s Open Return Letter to Richard Branson
The nominations for Best Newcomer are:
Carl Donnelly: Relax Everyone, It’s Carl Donnelly Jack Whitehall: Nearly Rebellious Jonny Sweet: Mostly About Arthur Kevin Bridges: An Hour To Sing For Your Soul
The awards, formerly the Perriers and the if.comedy awards, are this year funded by their producer Nica Burns after failing to attract a sponsor.
She said: ‘The shortlist of six shows reflects an outstanding year of highly creative, original comedy performance dominated by stand-up. Idiots of Ants top the sketch shows, Tim Key character comedy and John Bishop, Jon Richardson, Russell Kane and Tom Wrigglesworth won the panel vote for stand-up.
‘On a personal basis I can’t help but be disappointed that no women made the list this year despite them representing 15 per cent of all comedy shows. Whilst there was much to be liked at the end of the day it was felt that 2010 would be their year. I would urge them all to return and beat the men at their game.’
The winners will be unveiled in on Saturday lunchtime – a break with the recent tradition of making an announcement at a major party in the evening. The main prize is worth £8,000 with £4,000 for the best newcomer and for the panel prize, for someone who best embodies the spirit of the Fringe. The main winner will also get to perform at the Just for Laughs comedy festivals in Montreal, Toronto and Chicago.
The judging panel, which is chaired by Time Out comedy editor Tim Arthur, comprises Tania Harrison from Festival Republic, Paul MacGinnes from guardian.co.uk, Dominic Maxwell from the Times, UKTV commissioner Joff Powell, Radio 4 commissioner Caroline Raphael and comedy fans Niki Di Palma, Ross Stark, Jason Stone and Jo Williams.

Tim Key was excellent. He'd get my vote. _________________

| Jon Richardson for me. although part of me wants him not to become famous so he can still keep doing misanthropic genius to rabid fanboys like myself. |

Really liked Tom Wrigglesworth's show. Did not see the other main nominees.
Is Rhod Gilbert too big to be nominated? Is there a rule about excluding acts once they are at a certain level of doing big theatres? _________________ Funhouse Comedy Clubs in Nottingham, Derby, Grantham, Lincoln, Burton, Ashby, Tamworth, Loughborough, Eastwood and Leicester. For an award that features all male nominees the Man Award is well titled indeed.
Congrats to Jon Richardson on making the nominations - once a regular compere at The Comedy Box in Bristol. We're all proud of you down here! _________________ www.TheComedyBox.co.uk |

| Quote: | | Acts considered to have 'star' status are not eligible. For the purposes of this Award a 'star' is defined as any act who has starred in a television comedy or light entertainment series on terrestrial television or regularly fills a 500-plus seat venue on their own name. For the avoidance of doubt, one-off or 'guest' appearances in a television comedy or light entertainment series or appearing in shows as a panel member where your name is not above the title do not disqualify an act. Please note that these rules apply to all shows including international acts, where the status in their home countries will apply. For the avoidance of doubt, where any grey areas occur, the live rule will be dominant. |
That might have ruled Rhod out, I know he is playing some big spaces in his Autmn Show.
Think its a good list this year, especially pleased to see Carl Donnelly and Tim Key on there...

Very good point, you don't seem to see the big ones on there do you ?
Maybe it's because of how the awards affects an act's profile? They know it'll do a lot more good for a lesser known standup than the big boys ?
So many questions... Where are the pannel when you need them ? Sheesh. _________________

What do you do then, drop one of the fellas for a female act who's show might not have been as good, just so there's a female act? Thats not fair on the bloke dropped or the woman nominated. I like to think that the best shows got nominated regardless of gender. _________________ www.dave-twentyman.co.uk |

Agree completely- it's about the BEST act, not the fairest! When I do finally give it a go, I'd hate to be recognised for being a female, rather than for being good. _________________

I'm not advocating positive discrimination or anything like that. I just thought it was funny that the original typo called the main award the man award directly after saying it was an all male nominee list. Seemed appropriate in context. _________________ www.TheComedyBox.co.uk |

Is nobody else incensed that all the main nominees are not only male, which has been picked up on, but also all playing at the same venue, the Pleasance? How fucking lazy is this year's judging panel? _________________

I want Jon Richardson to win the main award, and Carl Donnelly to win the best newcomer award. As for Rhod Gilbert not being included, he was included last year; if he was in this year, people would moan that it's even less inclusive.
Also, I don't think a black performer was included (I may be wrong, I haven't researched every act), but I don't think this matters. One year, there will be one Asian act, one African act, a workng-class female, a upper-class male, a 90-year old man and a 5-year old girl and people would still moan. 'There's no disabled act' 'There's no homosexual' 'There's no dead act'. Stop being so pathetic and get used to the fact that not every single person can be represented each year. |

Personally I think it is a fair selection. I would have liked to have seen Glenn Wool, Carey Marx & Nick Doody grab a nomination for the main act, and I was surprised Tom Deacon wasn't on the shortlist for best newcomer, yet Jack Whitehall was. I enjoyed Jack Whitehall's show immensely, but thought he would be too famous to have been nominated.
Yes it does seem strange that all the nominations are for two venues (although Pleasance is spread over four spaces this year). I do wonder whether the panel had actually considered any acts from the Five Pound Fringe or the Free Festivals?
I think David O'Doherty won last year because he wasn't at one of the big four (who had produced their own brochure), as I thought D O'D had done far better shows in previous years.
I am not concerned by the lack of female nominations. Positive discrimination, is still discrimination.
The question is, who should win? |

Winner should have been Richard Herring (even though I genuinely don't like him)
with best newcomers to King of Everything.
That is all.
Oh, one more thing, awards are bollocks |
