Having finally received my fringe festival catalogue I’m able to plan this years trip (whoop )!!
The past few years I have foolishly only been focussed on the headline acts (household names) but having recently entered the world of grassroots comedy myself I have been amazed at the high standards of acts I have seen.
One of which is Harriet Dyer, I saw Harriet in Sheffield a few weeks ago and spent thirty minutes gasping for air!! Finally a female comic, who steps away from the “normal girly talk” and delivers a wonderfully executed surreal and powerful set - twisting from the inventive storylines to the one liner with clinical impact.
Now seeing that Harriet will be doing a show at this year’s festival I am confirming my seat with a large (permanent marker) star next to her ad.
Really looking forward to tales of more Cornish capers and the chance to see her again before she’s a household name.
Jealous but inspired! |

I’ve gigged with Harriet a lot over the last few months, weather she was doing an actual set or being MC she always cracks me up with her expressive crazy stories and looks a pro on stage.
Offstage she is just as mental and one of the nicest comics I’ve met. Book her, she’s a good’un and always has nice trainers on. |

Harriet is most defiantly someone who lives and breaths her comedy, having gigged with her many times I have seen her just sweep an audience off into her own little world and safely plant them back following a crazy yet unique tour of her pleasantly twisted thoughts!
Off stage I'd be hard pushed to find anyone who has been more supportive and considerate to work with - and I couldn't recommend her high enough to anyone booking a night. |

Harriet's great but is there any need for this level of sexism?
Is it not possible to praise a female comic without damning every other female comic?
You wouldn't say you liked your partner because everyone else was fucking ugly in the same way it's possible to love your country without kicking the shit out of people who aren't from there.
As a matter of interest how many other female comics have you seen? _________________ "Comedy is thus the very opposite of shame: shame endeavors to maintain the veil, while comedy relies on the gesture of unveiling." |

Hi Bethany
As a female and huge comedy fan myself I feel fairly placed to offer "my opinion" on what I have seen. It is after all only my opinion and I can say that of many people I speak to referring female acts to "girl talk"
That is however to point out no disrespect but a common reference point.
Irrelevant of sex or prejudice my opinion was and is based on talent and the ability to offer a different perspective - I feel Harriet did this to a degree that I ( and I stress again it's my opinion) have not yet seen another female act do.
My comments were never aimed to offend but promote a female act - of which I hope to see more off particularly of this level who stood out against everyone (regardless of gender!) Hope you see where I'm coming from and I apologise for any offence caused but in relation to respect maybe in future if your issue is with the author of the post and not the act you should contact them directly. |

Do you mean that lots of people you talk to think that female comics just do "Girl talk"? That doesn't make your opinion any less sexist.
Which comics are doing "girl talk" and what exactly is it?
And just because you're a woman doesn't mean you can't be sexist. About 70% of the people who talk to me after gigs who say "I don't normally find women funny but you were great." are women.
That's not a compliment, that's saying "I didn't expect you to be able to do your job but against all my prejudices you were able to do your job."
And that's what you've said here about Harriet. Whether you intended to cause offence or not is irrelevant, what you've said is that most female comics are sub par because they do "girl talk" but that Harriet's good because she doesn't.
You've not judged her on her own merit, you've not said:
"I thought Harriet was brilliant she delivered a wonderfully executed surreal and powerful set - twisting from inventive storylines to one liners with clinical impact."
You've tempered it by only referring to her in relation to how rubbish you think female comics usually are. You could have said "I've never seen a female comic talk about these things before" but you didn't. _________________ "Comedy is thus the very opposite of shame: shame endeavors to maintain the veil, while comedy relies on the gesture of unveiling." |

I watched deb appleby last night. When she went on stage there was a horrible groan from a big chunk of the audience and people started texting and ignoring the stage. When she started getting laughs they gradually and reluctantly joined in. During the interval I overheard a group of them saying that 'she was like a proper comic not like a bird comic.'.
that is the public, that's what they think and believe. They distrust female comedy because they wanted to watch match of the day and their mum made them watch an audience with Victoria wood. They are shit, they treat female comics like shit. Occasionally they surprise themselves by listening and enjoying. It's not fair. _________________ 11 |

I'm going to echo the positive here and add that Harriet's comedy, like herself, is infused with warmth and silliness. Family stories take a surreal twist. She is brilliant!
Gemma, I do agree a bit with Bethany, though... it's not that what you're saying is sexist by intent. But I don't actually see much wrong with 'girly talk' - it's our experience of stuff reflected back at us, and I don't see why that necessarily crowds out the guys either. All aspects of human life should be visible on the stage. All that matters is that it's funny - and Harriet is. Don't want to crowd out Harriet's thread though, so might blog on this later and link back here (or maybe the comedy forum - where it's more relevant) to explain what I mean.
Carry on! |

Wishus your spot on - I think looking back it's easy to take that the wrong way and that it was a bad choice of language - point excepted
For my final statement ( cough) :
We are all agreed Harriet is great

Had Harriet at The Strand on Thursday - She was fantastic, the whole room fell in love with her.
In an industry where you get a lot of samey acts it's great to find someone who's quite charmingly unique! A genuinely lovely person too.
Would definitely recommend booking her! |
