I saw Matt tonight at a gig in Poole which I must state was not the best comedy venue I have been too, 50% of the audience were not really there for comedy and the sound on one side was dire. I watched him before the set and he looked disgruntled with the set up and actually thought he would have a bad night. The moment he stepped onto the stage he switched on the magic and was without doubt a truly professional comedian, playing with the audience and taking command of the ignorance factor. I really felt for all 3 comedians but have to say Matt Price, Tony Cowards & James Dowdeswell did a truly excellent job.

Matt did a fantastic job in trying circumstances, at one point during his set a man ran into the venue, screamed his head off and then ran back outside, completely derailing the gig for a minute or so.

Last night was the sort of gig that I would love reviewers and comedy critics to see, just to get a perspective on what it's like to be a working comedian, it's not all nice rooms with well-educated, polite audiences in Islington and Edinburgh, sometimes we have to deal with absolute car crashes which can't really be played with "boundary pushing" material about Kierkegaard or Thomas Aquinas or meta "anti" comedy which makes the audience think about the "art" of stand up.

Anyway, to concur with Martin, Mr Price did a cracking 30 minute set in a less than ideal room, he's a top act and I would heartily recommend him to anyone.

I'd heard good stuff about Matt so was looking forward to meeting and working with him.
The room we did was awful with bad sound, lighting and a chatty restless crowd but he just got on with it and produced a bit of magic that ensured everyone listened and laughed. He stormed it under difficult circumstances, the mark of a good comic for me.
He's going to have a great career

I like Matt but sounds like he needs to play better rooms!

I got in at 5 this morning. I am working as hard as I possibly can and will continue to do so. I'm sure you didn't mean sound patronising Alfie, but you did. So thanks for that.

All he's saying Matt is that the last three posts about you although full of praise for your act have been very critical of the actual venues

Wil's right mate, Alfie wasn't patronising you.
Playing bad rooms is part of growing up as a comic, avoiding them is impossible if you want to gain experience of handling any crowd.
I tend to get booked to play hard rooms, often opening nights. It isn't a bad thing to have in your armoury mate

Oh. Erm. I'm really sorry Alfie.

I'm also unreasonable, bad tempered and very tired today. I'm aiming, as Roughy quite rightly suggests, to be able to play any room one day, but the apprenticeship is even longer than the journey from Baildon to Wimbledon last night. Please accept my apology and I will promise to get more sleep.

All the best,

Matt

No problem Matt if you didn't get in until 5 I think I got off rather lightly!
I have a strict rule never to patronise anyone bigger than me.....so far it's working out well.
Keep well mate, Cheers. Alfie

Well after reading the comments on Matt Price's Chortle thread and hearing about him from so many other acts - I knew he was good - but bloody hell he's good isn't he?

He stormed the stinking hellhole* of the Wivenhoe Funny Farm tonight -very good, very clever, extremely likeable and just brilliant.

*more of a cuddly sauna, but I wanted to fit in on this thread.
