Despite shaky ratings
| Quote: | It had a lukewarm critical reception at best and shed more than half its viewers over its six-part run, but Life’s Too Short is coming back for a second series.
Co-creator Ricky Gervais tweeted the news yesterday, saying the return was planned for spring 2013.
He took to the social network site amid reports he was to ‘join’ Channel 4 after the Warwick Davies series flopped. The overnight ratings for the show started at 2.5million, but dipped to a low of 1million.
However, the Channel 4 show, about a mentally confused care home resident called Derek Noakes, was in the pipeline before Life’s Too Short had debuted – and was always planned for Channel 4 for fear of Gervais being over-exposed on the BBC.
Gervais also confirmed plans for a special episode of Sky 1’s An Idiot Abroad called The Short Way Round, in which Davies joins Karl Pilkington on his international travels. Gervais’s vision was to have the 3ft 6in actor sitting in a basket on the front of Pilkington’s bike.
His tweet confirming the news said: ‘FAQ Second Series of Life's Too Short Planned for spring 2013 An Idiot Abroad Special: The Short Way Round planned for end of 2012.’
The BBC have been keen to play up the audience figures that second screenings and iPlayer viewings of Life’s Too Short have received, to boost the overall aggregate ratings for the show. Nonetheless, it will be seen as a disappointment that by the time the series finished this week, it attracted an average of 1.4million to its slot, which would normally expect to average 1.8million.

Every episode of this has featured for two to three days on the front page of the new specially dumbed down "look at all the pretty pictures" BBC website and it still hasn't been a particular success. Most people who have watched it have been unable to muster up more than an "it's okay", and that's if they actually enjoyed it, whereas the general consensus has tended to be "a bit shit, really." And yet, while the BBC merrily cancel well loved and successful shows, this gets a second series because "we have to pretend everything Ricky touches turns to gold." _________________ Alan Sharp:Careful What You Wish For - Adelaide Fringe, The Piglet @ Gluttony, 22:30, Feb 15 - March 1

I was thinking the same thing. All these other great shows get cancelled and win awards and Life's Too Short gets a second series. As with most people I loved The Office, Extras and the podcasts but this is incredibly unfunny and uncomfortable to watch. But only uncomfortable because you want to stick to the end of an episode, but know that if it was anyone else you would have switched over and been more entertained with a documentary about Westlife.
It's also sad that the few fans it has seem to think people don't like it because it un PC. But the truth of the matter is, it's just really poor television, which is a shame because I really wanted to like it. _________________ Mike Belgrave's animation

Hopefully Gervais has realised he isn't indestructible, based on the way this series has bombed.
I'm confused though - has this actually been given a second series? He said he was PLANNING a second series... but that doesn't mean the BBC are giving him one? |
