Big Yin tops poll
Quote:
Billy Connolly has been named the UK's most influential stand-up comic of all time.

A hundred comedians compiled a shortlist of who had most influenced them, which was then put to a public vote.

Morecambe and Wise came second, followed by Victoria Wood. Lenny Henry, who came on 83rd in the Channel 4 list of the 100 greatest comedians, was No 7 in terms of influence, according to this poll

A separate survey for international comics was topped by Robin Williams,

Steve North, head of TV channel Dave, which commissioned the poll, said: ‘British stand-up is there with the best in the world ... It is great to see trailblazing stand-ups such as Billy Connolly and Robin Williams get the respect they deserve.

‘Both Connolly and Williams have consistently pushed the comedy envelope and whilst they may have more than 40 years of experience between them, they are still the funniest men on the planet.’

In fact, Connolly has 40 years experience alone, and Williams only marginally less.

The top 10 British comics were:

1. Billy Connolly2. Morecambe and Wise3. Victoria Wood4. Eddie Izzard5. Ben Elton6. Peter Cook7. Les Dawson8. Lenny Henry9. Sean Lock10. Rik Mayall

Wow. No Bob Monkhouse. Surely wrong?

Unbelievably wrong, Bob Monkhouse was and always will be the god of comedy in my book, I wonder where he did rate in that poll ?

Sean Lock is a good comic but the idea that he's influenced more comedians than Rik Mayall is ridiculous.

For me the glaring omission is Dave Allen. But I guess everybody is going to have their own "should have been on the list."

It's for most influential British comedian isn't it?. Dave Allen was from the Republic of Ireland and therefore isn't British

Got to be Stuart Lee. Practically every comedian under 30 in the country has stolen his essence. Apparantly.

I would add Jasper Carrot in the top 5 because of his long stories and use of characters.

Totally agree.

Dave Allen was 3rd in the International top ten behind Spike Milligan & Robin Williams.

Is there a link to see the whole list that was put forward as I would surely love to see where Bob Monkhouse and Tony Hancock rated in all this or even George Burns on the international front!

I think the problem/flaw with this story is that the comedians were asked to select the shortlist... but it was down to the general public (visitors to the Dave website) to pick the actual list... hence Sean Lock ending on the list.

I love Sean Lock, but he's not one of the top 10 most influential. He's host of Argumental, so Dave viewers will recognise him.

This more detailed story has information on the comedians polled...
