The illustrious University of Salford has produced some of the greats...Rik Mayall, Ade Edmundson and of course me (although I had nothing to do with comedy during my time there). _________________ "A beaut of a one-liner merchant" - londonisfunny.com

I must throw in my tuppenth and say that I know a few (predominantly) Oxford people that are, like the rest of us, trying their hardest to write great material - be it novels, screenplays, plays etc and just trying to create something brilliant and original.
It doesnt seem to automatically guarantee that they are further ahead if the are from my generation (between 28-35). It most certainly have have done for the unfunny-as-fuck Punt and Dennis generation of graduates though.
Admittedly, of the people I know, it does seem to have got them automatic freelance jobs at the BBC via friends and 'soft' nepotism (ie, just getting people through the door into jobs) - which in itself is no great feat. The pay is shit and the politics and fuckology are the same as in all publicly funded institutions. |

Absolutely not. It can certainly earn you an open spot at The Charlotte. |
Mike, how do you get to upstairs@The Charlotte bit, is there another entrance, or do you have to walk through the main venue? |

" What about the Goodies? A striking ommission, that has undermined this whole thread "
Yep, as they all went to Cambridge University it rather hammers the Oxbridge claim
Met at the footlight stuff, toured with Cambridge circus and went on to I'm Sorry I'll read That Again
In fact Tim Brooke-Taylor was president of the Footlights

TUT tut mr jug, OXBRIDGE is an ABBREVIATION of OXford and CamBRIDGE; used to describe THEM as a stereotypical single ENTITY. |

It'll take more than any explainations from me to get you up to speed
Perhaps one of your friends might help |

But I'll happily bow to your greater knowledge of the subject |

Rowan Atkinson's a graduate of Newcastle University, he's made a penny or 6. Billy Connelly is probably the most famous British stand-up internationally, I doubt he went to Oxbridge, though I've no idea if he's got a degree, very good folk singer though ... And Frank Skinner has a degree or 2 and he's not Oxbridged up, though he was shacked up with that Baddiel fella, so osmosis may have kicked in..
I do think there is an "Old boys" mentality at the BBC when it comes to hiring people from Oxbridge .... Or at least there used to be, they're all on the picket lines now... |
